What do enjoy about shooting with the iPhone?
I really enjoy the extreme limitations that you get with the iPhone (at least the model I have).  It really guarantees that you have to think about composition and pay attention to available light. Excellent practice, and a great daily exercise. Almost all of the photography I do with my other camera (Canon 1D) are portraits. I pretty much shoot the exact opposite with each camera.

What do you like about CameraBag?
I don’t think I’ve ever liked an image straight out of the iPhone.  I only start to like them after I can work with them in CameraBag.  It makes it so easy, and I love the ability to mult-filter.  I rarely use less than 3 filters.

What do you look for when you are looking for a photo to take?
90% of the images I have taken have been within about 16 blocks of where I live. I often just turn the camera on while I’m walking and wait for things to jump out.  I take a lot of images that I never use.

Free CameraBag Desktop Upgrade Officially Available 5/18!

We are exited to announce several new features coming to CameraBag Desktop! The features will come as part of CameraBag Desktop 1.5, a free upgrade to existing users, available for download on 5/18 at www.nevercenter.com/cbd.

Major new features include:

*Custom Filter Saving* - Save filter combinations including reprocessing using CameraBag's "Save Filter" tool. With the new feature you'll always have access to your favorite looks on the first try.

*Custom Filter Sharing* - Custom filters are conveniently saved as files that can be shared with friends and the CameraBag community. A link to our website from the application leads to samples and downloads of the latest custom filters. Shared filters can easily be loaded into the application with the "Load Filter" tool.

*Batch Processing* - Process a whole folder of images using the same CameraBag settings. Often photos from a particular photo session look best with the same filter combination and now there's no need to edit them one at a time.

*Silver Filter* - From the earliest day of photography, when taking a shot was a much bigger production than it is now. Get one of the most popular filters on the iPhone, with all it's blue-tinted monochrome magic.

Other changes include:
-Improvements to reprocessing to provide more interesting variation across all the filters
-Keyboard shortcuts for all major functions
-Two new borders (Black Line and White Line)
-One new aspect ratio (Superwide)

The images below are from two custom filters that will come pre-packaged with the CBD 1.5 release, "Matte" and "Saturated 70s," and one custom filter that will be available via the custom filters page on the Nevercenter website (coming soon), "Slate."

CameraBag Artist Daniel Berman aka "Reservoir Dan"

Name: Daniel Berman aka reservoir_dan
Location: Milton, Ontario
Equipment: iPhone 3GS
Favorite Filters:  Magazine, Lolo, Helga, Colorcross
Shooting with the iPhone since: July 2008

How did you first get involved in photography?
I have been working as a documentary filmmaker/tv producer for 15 years, so I have a fair amount of experience working directly with cameras, shooting my own films, watching top-flight DOPs (cinematographers), etc. Video and stills are different worlds, but they do have much in common. I have always taken photographs but it was iPhoneography that finally, really opened my mind to the infinite possibilities of picture-taking.

What do you enjoy about shooting with the iPhone?
I enjoy the immediacy. I can go for a walk, shoot a picture, process as I go and upload to my photoblog before I get home. But it's not just that it's always in my pocket, I actually enjoy the process of working with images in my hand, with my fingers, it's more tactile than a desktop. The other big thing for me is the 3GS touch-to-exposure feature. This is huge because it allows quick picture taking of a kind that cameras in auto-mode try their best to avoid. The iPhone lets me "touch" a hotspot and get a radical exposure quickly, intuitively without any manual fuss.  I like that.

What do you like about CameraBag?

The main thing about CameraBag is the high quality and good taste of the filters. It's usually the first app I tap when starting to process an image. There are no gimmicks, no heatwaves or mirror stuff. The application appeals to people who believe that images are flexible and can be made to look better than what a tiny lens and jpeg engine will natively produce. It's also fast, reliable, simple to use and doesn't crash.

CameraBag Artist Joe Philipson: "I don't like untreated iPhone photos at all now"

Name: Joe Philipson
Location: Hawaii/Los Angeles
Equipment: iPhone 3Gs
Favorite CameraBag Filters:  Colorcross and Instant (sometimes used together on CameraBag Desktop)
Snapping iPhone Photos Since: Sep 2008

What do you like about the shooting with the iPhone?
Being a photographer for a living you forget or sometimes don't "feel like" taking photos for yourself. You know, the original reason you fell in love with photography? So with the iPhone it sort as revived that "take pictures for fun" attitude that I lost somewhere when become a pro. I love that I don't care if the photo is perfect because the expectation is crap so when you get good stuff you're excited.

What was it like discovering CameraBag?
CameraBag helps with that look that I so love and cherish with the retro photos. I have 22 cameras in my collection dating back from kodak's first box cameras through WWII and up to today. All because I like the look of the old film photos. Since the app first came out on the iPhone I have been processing my photos with CameraBag. I don't like untreated iphone photos at all now that this app is out. I remember emailing you guys too asking for a desktop equivalent and when you responded that one was coming out I freaked out. I was probably one of the first people to download your desktop app and probably the first one to use it in a professional capacity.

What do you find compelling about the CameraBag experience?
It does things to photos that I would normally never do, mostly because I'm anal about exposures and stuff. So it'll blow out highlights, change colours, even dull the photo. I guess what I like about it is that it doesn't give me control of the outcome. Unlike other photo apps where you can adjust how strong the effects are this doesnt do that. I like it's simplicity, if the app gives me too many options it just turns into work and then I'm not enjoying what I'm doing, I'm messing around trying to figure out how to keep a good exposure and get the desired effect.

CameraBag Artist Michael Seneschal: "People act more natural in front of an iPhone"

Name: Michael Seneschal
Location: Boston, MA
Equipment: iPhone 3G
Favorite CameraBag Filters: ColorCross, 1962, Instant
Snapping iPhone Photos Since: July 2008

Why Shoot with the iPhone?
The iPhone is 100% simple to use because there is only one button to press. Since I don't have to think about camera settings, I can focus on what really matters; my subject. Another benefit is the iPhone's unobtrusiveness. Meaning, people tend to pose stiffly when they see a large DSLR, but people act more natural in front of an iPhone.

Why CameraBag?
The filters in CameraBag are easy and fast to apply. The vintage feel of the filters goes hand-and-hand with the basic lens on the iPhone. The filters actually make the iPhone a better camera.

How do you select a subject?
I look for patterns, lines and shapes that I can shoot from an interesting perspective. Patterns are everywhere - look no further than the pattern of keys on your computer's keyboard, the pattern of stopped cars during rush hour traffic, or the pattern of wrinkles on Grandpa's forehead while he's sleeping during The Price Is Right.
